1 A mobile phone or tablet is hit and broken

The most common accident covered by insurance is the breaking of a small digital device.

How common? Over 30,000 broken appliance damages are reported to Pohjola Insurance annually.

Follow these steps: If you have comprehensive home insurance from Pohjola, take or send the device to a Fonum shop. At Fonum, you do not need to fill out the insurance claim, as Fonum will ask you the necessary information and handle the case with you throughout the process.

2 A dishwasher, laundry machine or air source heat pump breaks down

Comprehensive home insurance covers the premature failure of home appliances.

How common? Approximately 20,000 insurance claims on broken home appliances are filed per year.

Follow these steps: See the detailed instructions at vahinkoapu.pohjola.fi/en and file the application online.

3 Stolen bicycle

Bicycle theft is the most typical crime-related accident covered by the comprehensive home insurance.

How common? We receive thousands of insurance claims for stolen bicycles per year.

Follow these steps: First report the crime, then submit the insurance claim.

4 Water damage caused by leaking or frozen pipes

Damage to the property is covered by the building’s insurance, while damage to the personal belongings is covered by movable property insurance. If the damage occurs in a leasehold property, the housing company is required to repair the structures to the basic level preceding the damage.

If the apartment has been renovated in ways that increase the basic level, for example by choosing more expensive tiles in the bathroom, the share of the damage exceeding the basic level is covered by the flat owner’s comprehensive home insurance.

Any damage to movable property is covered by the owner’s or the tenant’s comprehensive home insurance.

How common? We receive thousands of insurance claims for leaking pipes every year.

Follow these steps: If you are the owner of a property, such as a detached house or summer cottage, read the instructions at Vahinkoapu and file the insurance claim. If you live in a leasehold property, for example in a block of flats or a terraced house, first contact the property manager and then your insurance company.

5 A tree falls on a building or items in the garden

Damage to a building is covered by the building’s insurance, damage to a car by vehicle insurance and damage to goods by comprehensive home insurance.
Please note that, if a tree that grows on your plot falls on your neighbour’s plot, the damage will be covered by the neighbour’s insurance – unless the tree was visibly in poor condition. In that case you, as the property owner, should have removed the rotting tree.

If you cut down a tree in your garden and it accidentally falls on, for example, your neighbour’s outdoor storage shed, liability insurance within comprehensive home insurance covers the accident.

How common? We receive thousands of insurance claims for accidents caused by natural phenomena per year.

Follow these steps: See the detailed instructions at Vahinkoapu and file the application online.
